BMTV 47 – How to Make a Galaxy Ball

Hello and welcome to BMTV.
Mark from Pioneer joins us again to show us how to make a large New Year’s Eve decoration. This is a Galaxy Ball, which measures 6ft high! What’s more, these are really easy to do and take no time at all!
They are made from Qualatex taper balloons, which are diamond-shaped foil balloons with an over heat-sealed tip which easily ties to other balloons, working the same way as the QuickLink balloons. We sell these in multiple colours and sizes, and you can find them on our website in our Taper balloons section.

We are using the 38 inch tapers for this decoration to create a large structure for massive impact. You can helium-fill the larger shapes if you like, but the smaller tapers are only suitable for air-filling and need to be heat sealed. We are air-filling our tapers to increase their longevity, but you could look at filling them with nitrogen as nitrogen balloons will even outlast air-filled balloons! We are simply going to air-fill ours using our trusty Qualatex hand pump, but you could use an air compressor or cylinder. Bear in mind that an electric inflator may heat the air as it inflates, so you may need to top the balloons up once the air inside cools down. Make sure you don’t over-inflate the tapers; you should be able to still see creases down the side of the balloons. Next, tie two of the balloons together at the necks to create a duplet. You will need 9 duplets in total. Now you can make the Galaxy Ball!

To do this, get two duplets and tie them together by simply wrapping one around the other and crossing the necks over. Add another duplet using the same method, this will secure the previous one in place. Follow this method and keep adding duplets to build up the design. If you are using a multi-coloured design, try to keep half of the colours to one side of the decoration and half to the other side to get an even distribution of colour. You don’t really need to alternate the colours evenly when you add the duplets as you can always fine-tune later on. The last duplet to add will be the most difficult, and you may need to manhandle the balloons to get the last one in. A bit of colour-rearranging, and your design will be complete! You can hang the Galaxy ball from tulle or nylon line, and even hang them in decreasing sizes for an even more creative decoration.

To hang the decoration, we would recommend using a Magmover with a magnet attached to the Galaxy Ball via a string of nylon line. Putting this up is really simple, and you can see how we did it towards the end of the video.
